SecurePCs StorageRex Overview - Diagram SecurePCs StorageRex Service Creates Remote Backups of specified data directories and transmits them over the internet to the StoragRex Server. The backups are created using the standard Windows XP NT backup utility. Any combination of one to three selected directories and MY Documents can be backed up. After the backups are created they are transmitted to the user's personal directory on the StorageRex server using a securely established file transfer connection. Restarts of transmissions are automatic if they are interrupted. Most internet connections are relatively low speed in comparison to the amount of data many people and businesses have on their computers. Depending on the backup size this could be hours or even days. Tests have shown that computers purchased over the last few years will operate reasonably well for most applications while this transmission is processing. An alternative will be developed to backup to media andsend the initial backup through the mail. If the transmission is interrupted before completion it may be restared where it left off. The transmission does not have to start from the beginning. After the original complete backup, called a "normal" backup in technical parlance, periodic "differential" backups are taken on a daily basis. Differential backups copy and transmit on changes that have been made since the normal backup. Periodically an "incremental" backup is run which designates that all changed files since the last normal have been backed up. This will reduce the network traffic of subsequent differentials. In the prototype, restores will be done by transmitting or sending the backups to the user who will, with the assistance of SecurePCs, if necessary, restore the files using Windows XP NTBackup utility.
